DR AND MASTER ZHI GANG SHA - The founder of the Institute of Soul Healing and Enlightenment - Dr. Sha is a medical doctor in China and a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine in China and Canada. Born in the Shaanxi province of China in 1956, he became interested in healing as a young child as he observed people in his immediate and extended family struggling with a variety of illnesses. At the age of six, he was accepted by the first of several masters in Eastern martial arts. At 22, even before completing his training as a physician, Dr. Sha began to combine the knowledge of energy development he had learned through his practice of martial arts with traditional Chinese acupuncture to create his own unique acupuncture system. Dr. Sha went on to study at Xi'an Jiaotong University, completing his medical degree in Western medicine in 1983. He was also certified as an acupuncturist and herbalist in 1986 by the World Health Organization's Institute of International Acupuncture and Moxibustion in Beijing, where he taught acupuncture, tai chi and qigong to foreign physicians. He is a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine and a registered acupuncturist in Canada. In 2005, under the aegis of Dr. Zhi Chen Guo, his revered teacher in China since 1990, he became the sole Western teacher of Body Space Medicine, which helped contain the SARS epidemic in China. Dr. Sha also completed a Master's degree in Hospital Administration at the University of the Philippines in 1988. While there, word of his skill as an acupuncturist spread and he treated numerous VIPs while offering a street clinic for the poor. Veteran Director of Photography George Tirl (Steel Dawn) was impressed with van Heerden's burgeoning talents. Similarly, actors who have worked with van Heerden (from Oscar winners and nominees to popular stars) are eager to do so again and all readily praise his collaborative, professional and compelling style. In addition to directing, van Heerden has played other significant roles. He co-produced the feature Left Behind: the Movie (2000), starring Kirk Cameron and Brad Johnson, which went on to become the number-one selling independent video of 2000. Among other things, Mat has designed consumer water filtration devices, photovoltaic roofing panels, medical bacteriological filters, emergency chemical drench systems, computer disk drives, and portable fiberglass buildings. Stein is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he majored in Mechanical Engineering. He is an active mountain climber and serves as a guide and instructor for blind skiers with the Ski for Light cross-country program.
