Anne McTavish was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She received a B.A. (with a major in political science) from The University of Calgary in 1980 and a law degree (LL.B.) from the University of Alberta in 1983. She was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1984 and has practised law ever since. She is a also a trained mediator.
