Upon graduating from the University of Richmond in 1967, he received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in economics and an ROTC Commission in the US Army as a Second Lieutenant. After a distinguishing performance as Company Commander of a Mechanized Infantry Company at Fort Hood Texas, he was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1969 and sent to Vietnam where he assumed command of a six man Mobile Advisory Team advising South Vietnamese combat troops in remote parts of Tay Ninh Province. With minimal direction from his superiors, he led his small team with distinction in the face of intense pressure from the enemy and considerable incompetence and apathy from his counterpart Vietnamese officers.
